Business Insurance

What is Business Insurance
Introduction
Whether for-profit or nonprofit, small businesses should have certain kinds of insurance. Liability insurance is highly recommended for property and automobiles. Worker's Compensation Insurance is state-required when you have employees.

Part of the decision about what insurance to buy depends on the nature of the business. For example, if it has a lot of assets, it might consider theft and property damage insurance. You may want life insurance on you and other critical personnel in your organization. You also may want to consider various other forms of insurance, for example, Directors and Officers (if you have a Board of Directors) or business interruption, Be sure to also visit the topic Risk Management in the library.

BUSINESS INSURANCE INFORMATION
The success of a business, whether it's a tiny enterprise run out of a basement or a large corporation, is largely dependent on hard work and ingenuity. However, no matter how industrious you are, one disaster can wipe out all your profits and even destroy your business. The key to making sure that all the effort and money you have invested in a business doesn't disappear when a disaster strikes is to protect it with the appropriate insurance.

What Types of Business Insurance Can You Buy?
You can purchase business insurance for nearly every operation and risk your business faces. In fact, with so many options available, it is hard to determine what type of coverage you need. Here's where to start.

Business insurance is a broad description that can be broken down into a list of nine types of insurance policies and here I will briefly explain the coverage and expand on these as individual topics. For now, these are general descriptions so that we are talking about the same thing when I use these terms in later articles.

Property Insurance
Property insurance insures against loss or damage to the location of the business and its contents. It can also insure the property of others in your control when the loss occurs. Property insurance can be for a specific risk. For example, a fire insurance policy insures only against a fire loss to the location. A tornado is not a fire and, therefore, that loss would not be covered. The insured location can be owned, leased or rented.
